Storm Ridge · Camp 3 · Stone Bridge
News and structure
Here the ridge narrows, and an old stone bridge spans the drop between two cliffs. Its stones were carried up from below, from the coast and the pass. The storm can't pry them loose: support, resistance, breakouts and liquidity still work when news hits. Here you'll learn to read the news together with the structure you already know.
The camp's rules
- 01
The news doesn't erase what you learned below. Levels work in a storm too: a news spike often runs into old resistance or support and stops there.
- 02
A breakout on news is still a close: a news candle's wick poking through a level isn't a breakout. Wait for the close and the retest (Pass Mouth).
- 03
If a news candle wicks past a clear high or low and closes back on the level's old side, that's a sweep (Underground Lake): the stops are gone and the direction can turn. It's the one exception to Lightning Rock's 'don't trade the first candle' rule: enter at the close of the sweep candle, stop beyond the tip of the wick.
- 04
The rate decision itself is usually known in advance; the surprise is in the statement and in what the Fed chair says.
- 05
Fed day comes in two waves: first the statement, then the press conference half an hour later. The second wave can extend the first or reverse it completely; don't open a trade until the second wave is over.

Same rule in a storm
Sometimes news breaks a range that's lasted for weeks, all in a single candle. But the breakout rule doesn't change: a breakout is a close, not a wick.
If the news candle's wick went past the level but the candle closed back on the old side, there's no breakout. That looks more like the sweep you'll see in the next lesson.
Even after a real breakout on news, you look for the entry on the retest: price comes back to test the broken level, and if it holds, you get in.

The news sweep
Stops pile up above equal highs and below equal lows. When news hits, price often reaches into one of these pools.
If the news candle wicks into the pool and closes back on the level's old side, that's a sweep: the stops are taken, and the fuel in that direction is spent.
A sweep is usually followed by a move the other way. Enter at the close of the sweep candle or on the first pullback; stop beyond the tip of the wick.
At Lightning Rock we said, 'don't trade the first candle.' The sweep is the one exception: the pool was in plain sight, the news swept only that side, the close is back on the old side, and the stop has a clear home at the tip of the wick.

It's the wording, not the decision
The rate decision is usually known in advance: the market prices in the expectation weeks ahead. The surprise usually lies in the statement's wording and in the chair's words.
The first wave comes with the statement. Half an hour later the press conference begins, and the chair's words can extend the first wave or reverse it completely.
At the March, June, September and December meetings, Fed members' rate projections come out too; on those days the storm can be bigger.

Test yourself
The news candle threw a long wick above resistance but closed below it. Is this a breakout?
- ✓ No: news or not, the close is below the level
- · Yes: the news hit and price traded above the level
- · Yes: news candles are always breakouts
The first rule from Pass Mouth: a breakout is a close. In a storm the wicks get longer, but the rule stays the same.
Where do you look for an entry on a news breakout?
- ✓ On the retest: once the broken level is tested and holds
- · At the top of the news candle
- · Before the breakout, by guessing the news
Even when the breakout comes with news, the entry is in the same place: the return to the broken level and the hold. The stop is close, and it has a clear home.
